What I have been doing lately...

A couple weeks ago my grandfather died. So Jodi and I packed up and headed to Ontario for a week for the funeral. When I got back Jeff was waiting for me at the airport, so we were able to hang out together for almost a week which was great. Last time I saw him was in Seattle last August. I have also been doing some reading...
The above book was great. The reason I read it is because it was just made into a film that won at the Sundance Film Festival. So I thought I would give it the ol' college try. It ended up working out. Here is a paragraph from the book that I thought was perfect...
'While Dad was in prison the rule had been to never see the same stud three nights. One night is forgot like a fart, two like a pang, but after three nights lain together there is a hurt, and to soothe the hurt there will be night four, and five, and nights unnumbered. The heart's in it then, spinning dreams, and torment is on the way. The heart makes dreams seem like ideas.'
I am not going to say much about Divisadero. All I will say is that if you haven't read any of Ondaatje then you are missing out on something absolutely incredible.
This is what I am currently reading. I have read it before but I love it so much I am doing it again. Virginia Woolf...nothing else to say. If you haven't read anything by her you're an idiot.
I have also been watching a lot of film...
The above film is by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. I watched it last night. Quite beautiful. Not sure exactly what was going on. But I'm okay with that.
Pictured above is Terrence Davies. I have always been interested in seeing his films. So I bought a box set of them a while ago and just got around to watching them. They are quite something. A lot of his subject matter is autobiographical which I like. You should definitely search him out if you can.

This is what i have been doing all weekend...editing. i am basically done too. there are a couple things i still need to accomplish, well actually my friend Kelley (in the picture) is going to accomplish because it's her computer i am using, and she is smarter than me.
but the whole thing should be done by the end of the week. and then i will try to post it here.

The Wire

I am re-watching The Wire right now, and oh man, is it incredible. I have always found it interesting how art can affect you differently at different times in your life. I watched this show a couple years ago and I really enjoyed it, but I find it affecting me differently this time, and I am excited to see where the 5 seasons take me this time around.
If you have never seen this show I would suggest trying it out. It is easily one of my favourite shows of all time, if not my favourite. However, it is not for the faint of heart. The language is rough, and the violence is hard to take sometimes, but it is worth it.
Trust me.

i have been taking pictures but not developing them, which is kind of weird for me. but this whole application process for grad studies is so very tedious and somewhat overwhelming. i am finally done with the University of Alberta...i think. now onto Univ of Calgary, Univ of Saskatchewan and Univ of Manitoba. as overwhelming as it is i am still quite excited, which i take as a good sign. i have also had to push back the shooting of the short film a couple weeks. turns out it's more difficult working with film that i first thought. i had to send away some film to toronto in order to get it developed. so i am at their mercy with time. i am hoping to shoot it the last weekend in november. i think my initial aim to have it finished by xmas is out the window. but that's alright.

I am currently writing a screenplay for a short film i will be shooting next month. i think i just wrote the 22nd draft of it. or close to anyway. but i do like it more and more the more i rewrite it. so i will take that as a good thing.

the above 2 pictures are new ones. i took them in the last month. there are part of this new thing i am doing. it's kind of going somewhere i wasn't planning, so i am thinking the name of the series is going to have to change. i will keep you updated as i am sure you are dying to know. but i am enjoying it a lot. it's forcing my eyes to look at the world differently through the camera which i am very much liking.

there is a light leak in my camera. but i think i fixed it. i just need to find some super glue then i'm set. but i did lose a few rolls of film due to the fact that i didn't know there was a light leak. silly me.
check back here soonish. i am in the process of updating my website with new images. hopefully in the next couple weeks. depends how the fixing of the camera goes.

Remedy Cafe - Be there - July 4th @ 8pm(ish)

upon further thought and encouragement from a certain man named matt wilkinson i decided to incorporate the above picture in 'Our First Home' which will be unveiled on July 4th @ 8pm(ish) as it says in the subject line. there are 10 photos in total and they are currently up at Remedy. unfortunatley Remedy Cafe is a very big place and 10 photos don't make a huge dent but they're there tucked away nicely in the corner on the bottom floor.
Dave McG will be playing some music on the top floor in between 8:30pm and 9:00pm. he plays some good stuff so don't miss out.
i will be putting up a new website this saturday or sunday. it has a lot of new photography and some you will recognize. it also has the entire series of 'Our First Home' for those who won't be able to make it out. i will let you know when it's up.

So the month of July is quickly approaching. My photography will be up at Remedy Cafe for the entire month on the bottom floor. I started reading this book that is making me very angry. It's called 'God is not Great - How religion poisons everything' To be quite honest, I am not angry because i disagree with how he thinks, there are some things that i do agree with. He was voted one of the top intellectuals in the world by some british magazine, but throughout the book he make statements and points that are not based on all the facts, in order to fit his thesis; that religion poisons everything. I guess that is what passes for intellectual thought these days. I am going to finish reading the book, but if i ever run into the author on the street, he better start running because i am going to punch him in the crotch...right in the crotch.

So we finally got our computer up and running again. finally. i hate technology. really.
but i have not stopped taking photos. i have been doing it a lot lately actually, and i have a bunch scanned ready to share with the world. i am going to be working on a new website soonish so be on the lookout for that.
in other news...jeff and i are done our 4th short film. i should be receiving a copy in the mail soon. jeff finished it in vancouver. i've seen it and i really like how it turned out. if there is anyone out there still checking this thing and would like a copy just let me know.
i am also going to germany in a week and a half. i am going to try to update this thing more often now, but from the 15th til the 23 there will be nothing because i will be far, far away. it's going to be awesome.

There are so many ways to shoot interesting portraits and at the same time there are so few that will be remarkable.

As people we have evolved to be curious and intrigued about other human beings. It is part of our genomic imprint influencing our visual attention so that a form of a human being will become an important reference point in a photograph. Photographers use this to their advantage for critical compositions. In portrait photography it is not just about the presence of a person, this is a necessity of the genre. What then becomes the focal point of attention in a portrait is either the gesture, the uniqueness of the person or the relationship of that human being with the surrounding environment.

Capturing a sensitive gesture that elicits the empathy of the viewer will transcend the image into feelings and by doing so elevates the nature of the portrait. Portraying unique individuals raises our curiosity, our wonder of the diversity of our cultures and species, so that the more different the subject is from the viewer the higher the curiosity. We are attracted to beauty but we are also attracted to ugly, we are attracted to what is different from us, we are attracted to what we wish we could be or what we are pleased not to be. We are attracted to human bodies in such a way that we look at them to make a comparison with our own bodies, perhaps even guessing a trend to sensuality.

The wonder the viewer feels while looking at a portrait raises questions about the story of the human subject, a story that the viewer builds by relating the person to the surroundings of the image. This is what is so striking about environmental portraits, they provide visual clues that help the viewer to imagine the story, real or not. They provide life to the subject, a glimpse of what this person is about and the factors that define his/her circumstances. It is about expanding the story, providing a sense of purpose to the subject.

So now that much of the chaos of moving is done for now, i have started to take photos again, and it feels good. These i took over christmas however. One of the new things i am trying this year, is taking a bunch of pictures that are connected...in either theme, lighting etc. it's quite the challenge. This july i will have my photography up at Remedy Cafe here in Edmonton. The pictures that i put up there are going to be some sort of series with my previous idea. All the pictures i put up will be connected in some way. I'll let you know how it goes. I started this morning, and i am feeling pretty good about it.
p.s. i watched the movie 'unbreakable' last night. what a remarkable film.

They are both playing at a local United Church which is cool. i am so very excited. they rock hard.

A week today we get our house. Right now our living room is full of boxes and hard to walk around in, so it'll be nice to get out of here.
In some sad news, my sewing machine is broken...i think. I can't get it to work. I bought it for $20 from salvation army over 3 years ago, so what more can i expect. I am looking forward though, to buying a new one. It's gonna be awesome.
My old man is coming out next week to help us move in and install some flooring. Should be an awesomely good time.

Maurice Pialat is pictured above. I have just recently gotten into his films and I am absolutely blown away. He did only 10 films and I have only seen 4. They are as follows.

If you have the time and the means, it is definitely worth checking him out. Most of his films aren't available here in North America, especially the ones he directed that aren't listed there. But let me tell you, both A Nos Amours and LouLou are masterpieces. Him and Godard, make my world go round.

I follow a few photo blogs pretty regularly for inspiration. One of them is by a New York photographer named Adam Amengual. I like his stuff. Anyway, he just posted this quote and I thought it was interesting, so I copied and pasted.

"I had been sitting by Hoan Kiem Lake one day in June 1995 when the thought took hold that I had to go home to photograph. It was not so much that I missed home, but that I was, at long last, ready to face the challenge of photographing in the United States. I wanted to make the American landscape my own again.

An old german film from 1929...awesome. i think i am going to watch another one tonight called 'Diary of a lost Girl'

So jodi and I decided to buy a house/townhouse. So what you see is what we got. It is awesome, and we're very excited about it. It's in the south end of Edmonton about 15 minutes from where we live right now. We have a backyard, which means a dog is not far away and 3 floors. 1100 square feet, with 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. We get possession on January 15, 2009.
In other news, the Young Wire Wicks are starting to record a full length album tonight. They will be recording all weekend and it's going to be awesome. I can't wait. They just keep getting better every time they play.

So here are some new pictures finally. They were taken during filming a couple weekends ago. I think I like them. I like working with a lot of light. I am also toying with the idea of getting a dark room. I'm not sure what it entails exactly, I am assuming it entails a lot of money, so I am going to start looking into it I think. I like the idea of having complete artistic control over my photography. From there I would also like to have control over framing and matting. Which would mean figuring out framing and matting. I have a lot of thoughts right now. We'll see where they take me.
New job is going well. I think I'm going to like it.

My Office...

This is a picture of where my office is located. This is called the Capital Building I believe. I started my job there this week. So far it's a little frustrating but only because I hate starting new jobs. But I am excited for what's to come working there.
I am also on my way to the photo lab to drop off a couple rolls that I finished off this morning. So I will get those up here at some point this week.
It's been crazy around here with the new job. And also Jodi and I put an offer in on a townhouse here in Edmonton last week. We haven't finalized anything yet. The seller's are going through a divorce and don't talk to each other ever, which is making the process go very slowly, but Jodi and I are quite excited. It's a great place.

DVD's

So in the mail this morning I received a Region Free Dvd Player. It is a glorious day in the Davies household. You see, some geniuses decided to make dvd watching difficult throughout the world and created regions. For instance, you can't watch a dvd from Britain on a regular dvd player from North America. So that is why I bought a Region Free Dvd Player. This way I can buy dvd's from 'across the pond' that aren't available here in North America. In other news. A week today I start a new job. I am tremendously excited. I have been serving for 7 years on and off and I am so happy to be done. If serving were a person I would say "see ya" and kick it in the crotch on Tuesday when my last shift was done.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is very special to me. I have a lot of relatives that fought in both world wars. Pictured above is my grandfather who passed away this summer. He was stationed in Halifax during World War 2 fixing airplanes for the RCAF. I am so proud to have this legacy in my family.

spent the weekend in saskatoon with the family. it was quite fun. we all stayed in one house and got to know each other a lot better. justin and aileen have a dog whose farts really stink. at least justin kept saying it was the dog.

new camera

these are the first pictures with the new camera. i like them, and i think i am going to love the camera. jodi and i are heading out to niagara falls this week for 5 days and i hope to get a lot of use out of it there.
i have been working a lot on scanning. it is quite hard and very time consuming. i am teaching myself how to scan negatives so i can replace some of the pictures on my website because i know they can look better. so far i have learned what not to do. i am getting there though. i feel like i've made a lot of headway.
so this could be my last post for a week i think.
